Shiatsu is the Japanese art of pressure massage on acupressure points of the body as a means of relaxing and balancing its vital energy. Although the word "Shiatsu" means "finger-pressure" in Japanese, other parts of the body - hands, elbows, arms, knees, feet - are also used to apply rhythmic stimulation.
During a Shiatsu treatment, the recipient lies or sits in various positions on a futon (light mattress) placed on the floor with pillows used for support and comfort. Shiatsu is best done over loose fitting cotton clothing and on an empty stomach. No oil or lotion is used.
